If you want to get ahead, get a helmet
I see that making helmets compulsory for cyclists is in the news again and that many of our two-wheeled friends are not happy.
Well, tough. They should be compulsory. It’s a no-brainer–sometimes literally - if you have the misfortune to come off your bike.
The Aussies, who don’t always get everything right but do seem to be ahead of the game on a lot of things, have had compulsory cycle helmets for years.
In the UK, the campaign for this form of protection has been waged for decades, especially the medical profession.
Most cyclists already wear them. In particular the message has got through to parents and their children.
But some loony cycling anarchists are calling it an infringement. Of what, I ask? Their lives? Their mental capacity?
So, I propose a radical new law – The Making Cyclists Play Their Part Like Other Road Users Act of 2016.
Out on a bike? – You have to wear a helmet.
Out on a bike? – You have to have compulsory insurance.
Out on a bike? – You have to give other road users some idea of what you are going to do next.
Out on a bike? – You have to stop at red traffic lights and pedestrian crossings.
Out on a bike? – You cannot weave in and out of heavy traffic.
Out on a bike? – You have to ride in single file.
Out on a bike? – You have to remember pavements are for pedestrians.
Out on a bike? – You have to remember you are not Sir Bradley Wiggins.
Simples.
